Scratching posts for Maine Coons

Scratching posts for Maine Coons

A grown Maine Coon sharpens its claws stretched out to full length and takes a running jump onto its cat tree. A small scratching post won't survive that. We have two cat trees made by Pushok at home, and they're the ones we recommend to our kitten buyers.

What kind of cat tree a Maine Coon needs

Posts a metre tall or more

Cats sharpen their claws by stretching upwards. A grown Maine Coon needs a post at least a metre tall, or it will find the corner of the sofa or a door frame instead. Both cat trees have long posts of about a metre.

A heavy base

If a cat tree wobbles when the cat jumps on it, the cat soon stops using it. Fidika weighs 24–30 kg and Brunetka 26–33 kg, and both are 110 cm tall. They stay put even when the cat leaps to the top from the floor.

A bed big enough

A Maine Coon doesn't fit on a small shelf: its paws and tail hang over the edge. Fidika has an 82×42 cm bed and Brunetka a 67×42 cm one, both with raised sides.

A den of its own

In a new home a kitten needs a corner where it can hide and still see the whole room. Both cat trees have a woven den, 67×42 cm with a 19×24 cm entrance.

What we have at home

Fidika cat tree: two metre-tall sisal posts, a rattan den, a bed with raised sides

Fidika

A carpeted cat tree for large cats

The biggest bed among Pushok's standard models: 82×42 cm, so a grown male fits in it completely. Four wrapped posts, two of them a metre tall. There are no steps; the cat jumps onto the bed straight from the floor. It isn't tall, so you can stand it by a window without blocking the light.

Brunetka cat tree: sisal posts, a rattan den, a hammock and a bed

Brunetka

A carpeted cat tree for large cats

A den, a hammock, a bed and a ball on a string, all on one base. The base is wider than Fidika's, 100×42 cm, so it stays steady even with a lively cat on it. Handy when you have two cats: the hammock for one, the den for the other.
